Lycoris Recoil is back with another action-packed episode and a mystery that will have viewers wanting more.

The following contains spoilers for Episode 2 of Lycoris Recoil, "The More The Merrier" now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The second episode of Lycoris Recoil has just come out, and it's only gotten more serious. What many in the online anime community would be another simple slice-of-life café anime turned out to be a dystopian spy mystery, full of hackers, violence, and an overly-cheerful protagonist to contrast it all.

The anime takes place in a world where orphan girls are taught to be Lycorises, a form of violence control. There is political intrigue, crime, and secrets hidden behind the adorable anime girls that star in this series. The series drops little snippets of exposition through news or background conversation, encouraging viewers to put together the puzzle pieces themselves.

The episode opens with a quick rundown on the Alan Institute, which has been hinted at throughout the first episode. Aside from keeping some details mysterious, saying it is unknown if the Alan Institute is truly a group or one person, the clip also goes over the Alan Institute's search for geniuses in poverty and other circumstances and offers them free assistance in exchange for their services.

After the short clip, we find that it has been narrated by toys serving as communication devices to unknown entities, one of which claims that the Alan Institute isn't the type to kill others. After the robot toy calls the squirrel Walnut, which is the name of the Dark Web hacker the DA is concerned about, they squabble for a few seconds before the screen glitches, revealing someone in a mask matching the robot toy watching the communication.

Returning to the café from the previous episode, LycoReco, Mizuki receives a message from Walnut. After finally seeing the theme song animation for the first time, we immediately go back to Chisato's apartment, where she is sleeping on her couch. She slowly wakes up before realizing she is late. When she arrives at LycoReco, she greets Mr. Yoshi, who she states was their first-ever customer. In the previous episode, he was the mysterious visitor that Mika reacted strongly to with a pendant matching the Alan Institute's logo.

After Mr. Yoshi leaves, Chisato begins to load bullets into the magazine of her pistol. Mika runs her down on a group of armed assailants who are chasing the target Chisato is sent after. While doing this, Chisato mentions a bag of goodies she brought for Inoue, the new recruit, who ignores them. The two girls leave the café, and Inoue runs Chisato down on more mission details as they ride a train to the designated location.

At the DA, Kusunoki is told Walnut is dead, according to rumors on the Dark Web. Kusunoki's assistant, however, reminds her that Walnut has been reported dead multiple times before only to find out he's still alive. The assistant also brings forth the photo analysis of the photo Chisato sent to herself from the client's phone last episode.

Returning to Inoue and Chisato, Chisato asks what they will do after meeting up with a hacker named Walnut. Inoue, exasperated, reminds her superior about a car that will be left for them in the parking lot of their destination. They are picked up by a small, white car driven by someone in a costume similar to the rabbit squirrel that Walnut communicated through in the virtual platform during the beginning of the episode.

The man in the costume also claims to be Walnut. Walnut also claims to be in costume to protect his identity. While Walnut is driving them to another location, they engage in small talk. Chisato reveals that Lycorises dress in schoolgirl-like uniforms to seem the least alarming in Japan. Walnut also says the yellow suitcase strapped in the front passenger seat contains his entire life's belongings. Chisato also reveals that since Lycorises don't have family registry entries, as a Lycoris is an orphan, they cannot get passports and therefore are unable to travel.

The man from the beginning of the episode with the toy robot mask is talking to a white van that was unable to follow Walnut's car, telling them that if the "two chicks in the car" get "in the way", those who were in the white van should kill them. Back in Walnut's car, the car is hacked and is being controlled by an external force. Walnut says this is the work of Robota, and theorizes they're being driven straight into the ocean.

A drone similar to the one in the last episode is following the car, and as we see Robota watching the feed it is confirmed the drone in the first episode belonged to them as well. Chisato shoots the car window out, and Inoue leans out of the shot window to shoot at the drone as they are driven off the road, hitting it repeatedly and killing Robota's feed.

The car stops inches away from being launched into the water, the two left tires hanging over the edge of a concrete platform. The white van watches from a distance as the three get out before the car tips into the water. After the crew changes locations to an abandoned building, effectively hiding from Robota's grunts in the white van, it is revealed that Robota found them through a drone and rerouted their grunts in the right direction.

This begins a shootout in the abandoned building. Chisato is able to narrowly dodge all the bullets from one of the grunt's machine guns in a logic-defying move, and then hits him multiple times with her pistol emotionless. However, the next man she shoots she offers to tend the wounds now that the shooting has stopped. When the grunt is initially resistant to the first aid, Chisato threatens him with her pistol until he accepts it.

It is revealed that Chisato shot them with rubber bullets. Although it left wounds, it was not enough to kill anyone she shot. The grunt that Chisato tended to warns her that their boss is watching them still. Just as Chisato runs to warn Inoue to not go outside, Walnut has stepped outside and is promptly shot.

He is then shot over and over by multiple automatic weapons. Inoue calls Mika, who says to gather Walnut's dead body and grab the luggage that Walnut had brought with them. The scene cuts to Mr. Yoshi, who is communicating with Robota, saying that the death of Walnut has ended his requests from last month. He also mentions that he will ask for Robota's services in the future.

The girls are being transported in a vehicle with Walnut's dead body and his luggage. At least, that is what they think it is. The assumed-to-be-dead Walnut rises up, and pops off their mask, revealing Mizuki. It is revealed that the real Walnut has been using a communication device in the mask to speak to the girls without being there in person, while Mizuki piloted a bulletproof costume with fake blood to make the death seem more realistic.

Then, out of the luggage that the presumed Walnut had brought with comes out a short girl with a VR headset on, talking at the same time as the communication device in the squirrel mask, revealing themselves to be the real Walnut. They all return to LycoReco, where Walnut has now holed up in the closet.

Mr. Yoshi returns to the café once again, and engages in banter with Mika at the front counter. Chisato asks Walnut to find the person who is in the image they received from the client in the first episode, and while Walnut does this they reveal their name to be Kurumi, which is the Japanese word for Walnut.
