Recently, some passengers shared photos of long lines at the airport.

There are several updates to Canada’s travel rules, which apparently affected some passengers passing through Toronto Pearson Airport this week.

On December 2, Alejandro Mayoral Banos shared a photo of a long winding route at the airport on Twitter, saying that Pearson was a “total Nightmare".

Mayor Banos arrived at Pearson Airport at 5:35 in the morning, about three hours before departing for Mexico City.

"I already checked in online the night before as usual," the mayor of Banos told Narcity via Twitter.

"However, this time they decided to arrange all passengers of international flights (Mexico City, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Barbados, India, Cancun, etc.) on the same line in order to actually arrive at the counter or automatic machine."

"It took me 95 minutes to put down any bags."

Earlier on Thursday morning, another Pearson passenger shared that the lineup for gate 5 actually started after six gates.

A spokesperson for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority told Narcity that it is usually very busy in the morning and preparing to take off. That, and "Given the health requirements of Canada and abroad, today's travel may be more complicated."

In response to growing concerns about Omicron variants, the Canadian government has imposed travel restrictions on Nigeria, Malawi, Egypt, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Namibia, Eswatini, and South Africa.

Among other rules, foreigners who have been to any of these countries in the past 14 days will not be allowed to enter Canada.

Most importantly, all travelers (excluding travelers from the United States) must be tested for COVID-19 after landing—regardless of their vaccination status, and must be quarantined until they get the results.

"We work with airlines and government agencies to process passengers as quickly as possible," said spokesperson Tori Gass.

“Sometimes, the processing time for passengers is longer than normal. We continue to recommend that passengers take international flights 3 hours earlier and domestic flights 90 minutes earlier.”

Since the federal government updated its travel rules to welcome fully vaccinated flyers from all over the world, Pearson Airport has always advised travelers to plan ahead and arrive early.

Three new routes were announced this week. ✈️☀️

There are now more flights departing from Toronto Pearson Airport, which can take passengers to sunny destinations without breaking the bank.

On December 8, ultra-low cost Swoop Airlines announced the launch of three new direct flights to Pearson Airport, taking passengers to three tropical destinations.

From December 4th, passengers can take a weekly flight to Los Cabos, Mexico. From December 5th, Pearson passengers can travel to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Then, from December 8th, passengers can fly twice a week to Kingston, Jamaica.

"The launch of these three new routes shows that Swoop's barrier-free fares have become popular in Toronto and highlight the need for ultra-low fare travel that we see across Canada," Swoop Director of Business and Finance Bert Van der Stege (Bert van der Stege), said in the announcement.

Airfares are also less than US$200, but for a limited time. As long as passengers book flights before December 18 or 15, the introductory one-way fare for Los Cabos and Kingston can be as high as $180.

Punta Cana booked a slightly higher one-way fare before December 12 at $199. All scheduled flights must also travel between January 5th and April 30th. Winter and spring holidays are blocked due to power outages.

In a recent interview, Dr. Peter Juni, Scientific Director of the Ontario Scientific Advisors Form, told Narcity that due to concerns about the Omicron variant, travel plans should be reconsidered for now.

Dr. Juni said: "We just need to realize that we don't yet know how long we can prevent Omicron from taking over Ontario or Canada," he also told Narcity that it "does not make sense" to travel due to increased risk of transmission.

The Canadian government has updated its travel restrictions based on the new variant, prohibiting recent travel to Botswana, Egypt, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa or Zimbabwe.

In Ontario, access to certain activities, services and businesses, including restaurants and bars, requires a vaccine passport.

Rolling out the latest restrictions is very complicated. 👇

Toronto Pearson International Airport has confirmed that it has not tested all incoming international passengers because the federal government still needs some time to implement the new regulations.

On Tuesday, November 30, federal officials announced the latest measures taken for international air passengers entering Canada from outside the United States in response to growing concerns about the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.

From the same day, fully vaccinated passengers must be tested for COVID-19 and quarantined immediately upon arrival until they receive the results.

However, as of Sunday, Toronto Pearson has been unable to implement the new plan.

In a statement to Narcity, the airport confirmed that it is "cooperating with the government on the specific details of the new test requirements" and said it will provide more information in the coming days.

Pearson said, “Not all passengers are being tested because the government needs more time to deploy infrastructure.” However, they added that random testing of incoming international passengers has increased.

On Friday, December 3, the Minister of Health, Jean-Yves Duclos (Jean-Yves Duclos) stated that due to infrastructure, space and staffing constraints, the latest requirements are being implemented "gradually."

Nevertheless, Duclos stated that all passengers should be prepared for the new requirements.

He said: "Let me be very clear: all travelers should be tested on arrival and be prepared for isolation."

Although the Minister of Health confirmed that Canadian airports "will not be able to test every target passenger overnight," he said that random testing has increased nationwide, and capacity is increasing every day.

He said that the intention behind the most recent measures (first announced on November 26) is to "mitigate the travel-related spread of the Omicron variant in Canada."

Earlier in the same week, passengers at Toronto Pearson Airport complained about long queues and waiting times. The airport told Narcity, “Given the health requirements of Canada and abroad, travel today may be more complicated.”

A spokesperson suggested arriving earlier than usual to deal with delays because “the processing time for passengers is longer than normal.”
