A Cape Cod man is facing multiple criminal charges. Police say he stole a car from an auto repair shop and hit the owner while speeding to escape in Dennis, Massachusetts.

The ordeal was captured by security cameras. This is a scene the staff of Dennis Town Auto Service said they would never forget.

"I'm lucky to be alive," said Nas Mahfouz, owner of the town car service company.

Mahfouz is counting his blessings because a stranger approached him shortly after the door opened on Tuesday morning, behaving irregularly.

In-depth news reporting in the Greater Boston area.

"When he came in, he yelled that people were following him and they wanted to kill him,'please hide me.' So I told him,'man, you can't be here,'" Mafooz recalled.

Mahfouz said he told the man to stay in the garage when he called the police, and then things went south.

Surveillance video from the store appeared to show that the man was later identified by the police as 29-year-old Joshua Lafrange from Mashpee, shortly before he left in a car in the store .

An employee of Mahfouz tried to stop Lafrange by closing the garage door—but to no avail.

"It's like in a movie," Mafooz said.

LaFrange drove through the door and hit Mafooz, who was standing outside, before taking off.

"I had to push myself off the hood of the car, otherwise I would be dead now," Mafooz said.

A few minutes later, LaFrange was arrested in nearby Harwich. He was sentenced to jail and issued a security deposit of $750.

Mahfouz worried that Lafrange might be out soon and hurt others again.

"I'm going through this story as I am now, just like what happened that day," Mafooz added. "It made me emotional and shaken."
